Customer service gives you daily practice in solving problems under pressure and working with people. Project management specialists plan work, coordinate teams, track budgets and deadlines and report progress. This move has one of the largest pay differences on the site, and also a real preparation gap.

What transfers

O*NET rates 22 skills as important for project management specialists. Ten are at or near the level of a typical customer service representative. Active listening, speaking and service orientation are strengths: project managers spend much of their time talking with stakeholders and keeping them informed.

The gaps

The largest gaps are in managing resources: financial, material and personnel resources. Systems analysis and systems evaluation are also well below the target level. Knowledge of administration and management and of administrative procedures is the main knowledge gap.

Education and experience

This is a move from O*NET Job Zone 2 to Job Zone 4. Among project management specialists, 64% report a bachelor's degree as the education their job needs; for customer service representatives the most common level is a high school diploma. The most common related experience is two to four years (33%).

No license is listed for this occupation. The BLS notes that professional certification is not always required but shows employers that you are competent.

Pay

The May 2025 national median was $102,320 for project management specialists and $44,770 for customer service representatives, a difference of about $57,550 a year. That is a typical figure across all experience levels, not an entry salary.

A stepwise route

  • Volunteer for process improvements, rollouts or team projects at work and track the outcomes.
  • Look at intermediate roles such as project coordinator or team lead first: the alternatives finder lists options in between.
  • If a degree is needed, use the cost calculator to compare studying part-time with your current income.
